TREE PRUNING & TRIMMING

Tree limb removal to make your trees safer, healthier, and more attractive.

What to Expect---

When you hire Godspeed for Tree Trimming

If you need tree pruning or trimming services in the Winston-Salem area, give us a call and we’ll send one of our experts to visit your property. We’ll examine your tree(s) and give you our recommendation for the best pruning method to meet your needs.

Don't just cut off problem branches

Your tree’s species, age, and the time of year can all affect how the tree will respond to pruning. Don’t just cut problem branches; make sure your tree thrives with pruning techniques that fit your unique situation.

One common (but damaging) pruning technique you may see in your neighborhood is called tree topping. We don't top trees – for the health of your tree and for your safety.

When you hire Godspeed Tree Service, rest assured that our tree care experts use the best pruning method for your tree.

Immaculate Cleanup

The tree trimming crews at Godspeed Tree Service are well known for our fantastic cleanup. After a pruning or trimming job is completed, we'll remove all debris and clean up behind ourselves so you can enjoy your view and landscape without any mess.

3 big reasons ---

Why Trees Need to be Properly Pruned

Safety

Broken branches and unbalanced trees can be hazardous to you, your family, and your property. Our tree pruning services mitigate these safety risks to prevent trees from falling over or dropping branches.

Tree Health

Diseased limbs and foliage will invite insect infestations and can even affect other plants in your yard. Broken and damaged branches can fall unexpectedly, further harming the tree and whatever is below it. Our methods allow your trees to grow strong and healthy.

Appearance

Don’t let your trees or shrubs outgrow your landscape design, block your view, or ruin your home's curb appeal. We use trimming and pruning methods to control growth while also maintaining the health of your trees and large shrubs.

How We Trim Trees

Crown Cleaning

Broken, diseased, or dying limbs can cause problems for your tree and are a hazard to you and your property. Crown cleaning allows us to remove the problem branches, leaving a healthier, better-shaped tree behind. After crown cleaning, trees are also more resistant to the heavy winds and rain we get in North Carolina.

Thinning

Is there a tree in your yard becoming weighed down by its own limbs? During the tree thinning process, we look at the tree from the inside out and selectively remove limbs to reduce the density of the canopy. This can be done to allow more light into your yard, maintain the natural shape of the tree, and make your tree more resistant to heavy winds, rains, and other harsh weather conditions.

Crown Raising

Are you constantly ducking around low-hanging branches that block access to your yard or driveway? Do branches scrape and hit the side or roof of your home? By removing the lower branches, we raise the tree’s canopy. Raising can be done to make more room for mowing, to keep branches and foliage from touching your roof, or to create easier access to walkways, driveways, and yard space.

Size Reduction

Reduction pruning is done to maintain or reduce the size of a tree, which can increase the amount of space in your yard or help make a tree or shrub fit better into the overall landscape design. Our reduction process controls the height while ensuring the health and longevity of the tree.

This is NOT the same thing as tree topping!

Pruning & Trimming---

Frequently Asked Questions

Tree pruning is one of the most common types of tree service in the Piedmont Triad area. Unfortunately, it's also the tree service that's most often done incorrectly, leaving homeowners with damaged, deformed, and unhealthy trees.

If you're thinking about getting your trees pruned, you probably have some questions about the timing, process, and more.

We always encourage our customers to learn what they can about proper tree pruning techniques before they hire a tree service company.

To help you understand the basics of tree trimming, we've put together answers to the questions we're most often asked. But if you have a different question, just give us a call!

It depends on the age and type of tree. Most trees should not be pruned for the first 3 years after being planted.

After that, younger trees benefit from being pruned every 2-3 years, and mature trees every 3-5 years.

However, this is a general guideline, not a hard and fast rule. If a tree is overgrown, blocking your view, casting too much shade, hitting your roof, or in any other way causing problems, you can have it pruned more frequently.

Fruit trees and trees that have storm damage may also need more frequent pruning.

Check for any broken branches or dead sections of the tree.

Also, check out the full shape of the tree, look for branches hitting a roof or other nearby structure, or sections of the tree that may be restricting access along a path or even blocking a view from a window.

Any time you think your tree may be dangerous or could pose a safety risk, contact a professional for a tree inspection as soon as possible.

Yes! In some cases, winter pruning may be preferable.

Winter pruning is a good idea for several reasons. Not only does it allow you to clean up your trees when they aren’t actively growing (which can help reduce the likelihood of stressing them or inviting insect pests and diseases), but it also lets you check off a gardening chore before things get hectic as the weather warms up.

Reputable tree service companies don’t work when winter conditions are hazardous to people OR trees!

Protecting your property and your trees is of primary importance, so we take no risks in bad weather conditions. When we experience any of the following situations, we'll have to reschedule your work for when conditions improve.

  • When temperatures drop to dangerously low digits
  • When heavy snow builds up in trees
  • After freezing rain has coated roads, power lines, and trees in ice
  • When freezing and thawing cycles create ice loads in trees and atop roads

Fall is the only season when pruning is not suggested (except for dead, damaged, or diseased branches). Fall pruning, like all pruning, stimulates growth - but new fall growth will likely be killed by the dropping temperatures as winter arrives. With winter approaching, this short-lived fall growth will end up being useless to a tree, and stimulating that growth requires using a tree’s stored energy reserves that would be better used to help it through the colder months ahead.

We do not top trees. This method of cutting trees shorter is not recommended and can be harmful to trees.

Instead, we use crown reduction. This is a specialized pruning technique and is the proper way to reduce the size of a tree.

Of course, planting the right tree in the right place is always the best option, as you can avoid unnecessary pruning.

Pruning gives trees a well-maintained look and adds to your curb appeal (which can increase your property value).

More importantly, though, pruning helps the health of your trees, allowing them to live a longer life.

Pruning can help younger trees to develop good branch structure, which helps trees when storms and strong winds arrive.

Pruning can also help mature trees by opening up the canopy, removing any dead or broken branches, and more.

Please give us a call if you have any questions about your trees or our tree pruning services.

As a general rule, cutting off dead branches may help a tree, but every situation is different. When done properly, cutting off a dead branch will allow the tree to focus on the healthy branches and promote more growth.

The type and size of the power line, as well as its proximity to the pruning we'll be doing, dictate how we will approach the work.

Any job that involves pruning near a power line requires a thorough inspection by one of our experienced arborists. If necessary, we'll coordinate with the local power company to disconnect power to the line(s) in or near your tree.

Safety is always our first consideration when working near power lines, so we take extra care to ensure our crews are safe. This might mean that scheduling your pruning job will be delayed while we make proper arrangements with the power company.

Owner Bobby Gates and his entire crew are professionals who clearly care about their work. They did a massive amount of trimming and shaping on our two 90-year-old Willow Oaks. The pruning resulted in lots of big limbs and debris in the yard, all of which they cleaned up beautifully. They left the yard in better shape than they found it. They were very polite and helpful in answering my many questions. It was a very positive experience, and we will definitely use them again.
